The 7 Best Beginner Tropical Fish Species (And Why They're Perfect for Your First Tank) |
From guppies to corydoras - these hardy, peaceful fish will help you succeed as a new aquarist |
After 63 years of keeping tropical fish, I've watched countless beginners struggle with their first aquarium. The most common mistake? Choosing the wrong fish. Today, I'm sharing the seven species that have proven themselves time and again as the perfect starter fish for novice aquarists.
1. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)
Guppies are the undisputed champions of beginner fish. These colorful livebearers are hardy, adaptable, and breed readily in home aquariums. They tolerate a wide range of water conditions and their constant activity brings life to any tank. Keep them in groups of three or more, with two females for every male to prevent harassment.
2. Platies (Xiphophorus maculatus)
Platies share many traits with guppies but are slightly larger and even more peaceful. They come in stunning color varieties including red, orange, and sunset. Like guppies, they're livebearers, so don't be surprised when your population grows. They're excellent community fish that get along with nearly everyone.
3. Corydoras Catfish (Corydoras spp.)
Every aquarium needs a cleanup crew, and corydoras are the perfect choice. These bottom-dwelling catfish are peaceful, entertaining to watch, and help keep your substrate clean. Keep them in groups of six or more—they're social creatures that thrive in schools. The bronze cory and panda cory are particularly good for beginners.
4. Zebra Danios (Danio rerio)
If you want active fish that are nearly indestructible, zebra danios are your answer. These striped swimmers are incredibly hardy and can tolerate temperature fluctuations that would stress other species. They're perfect for cycling new tanks and their constant movement adds energy to your aquarium.
5. Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi)
Neon tetras bring color and elegance to any tank with their iridescent blue and red stripes. They're peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more. While slightly more sensitive than danios, they're still suitable for beginners who maintain stable water conditions.
6. Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii)
Swordtails are larger livebearers with a distinctive tail extension on males. They're active swimmers and come in various colors including red, black, and pineapple. Like platies, they're peaceful community fish that adapt well to standard aquarium conditions.
7. Cherry Barbs (Puntius titteya)
Cherry barbs offer something different—males display brilliant red coloration when comfortable. They're peaceful, hardy, and less nippy than some other barb species. Keep them in groups with more females than males for best results.
Why These Fish Work for Beginners
All seven species share key traits that make them ideal for new aquarists: they tolerate common beginner mistakes, accept standard flake foods, stay relatively small, and play well with others. Start with any combination of these fish, and you'll be on your way to a thriving aquarium. |
