Kuhli Loach - Species Spotlight

If you have never seen a Kuhli Loach in action, you are missing one of the most entertaining oddballs in the aquarium hobby. These eel-like fish spend their days hiding under driftwood and rocks, then suddenly emerge at dusk to zip around the tank like tiny aquatic snakes.
What Makes Them Special
Kuhli Loaches (Pangio kuhlii) hail from the slow-moving streams and rice paddies of Southeast Asia. They reach about 4 inches in length but stay thin as a pencil, allowing them to squeeze into the tiniest crevices. Their bodies feature alternating bands of pinkish-orange and dark brown, giving them that distinctive tiger look.
Behavior That Will Delight You
These fish are social creatures that thrive in groups of six or more. When kept alone, they hide constantly. In a group, they gain confidence and you will see them more often. Watch for the Kuhli pile — several loaches tangled together in a hiding spot.
Tank Requirements
Kuhli Loaches need a soft, sandy substrate. Gravel can damage their delicate barbels and underbelly. Provide plenty of hiding spots: caves, driftwood, PVC pipes, or dense planting. They prefer dim lighting.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75-86°F (24-30°C)
Feeding
Kuhli Loaches are omnivores but lean toward protein. They love frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and sinking pellets. Feed them after lights out when they are most active.
Tank Mates
Peaceful community fish work best: tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and small gouramis. Avoid aggressive fish or large cichlids.
The Bottom Line
Kuhli Loaches add personality and movement to the lower regions of your tank. They are not fish you will see constantly, but when you do spot them racing across the substrate or piled together in a cave, they are absolutely captivating. |
